CERAMIC FRAGRANCE TESTERS: A SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE TO PAPER BLOTTERS

The paper blotter, also known as a scent strip or fragrance blotter, remains the most widely used medium for fragrance discovery. However, its use is not without consequences for both people and the environment.

When fragrances are sprayed onto traditional blotters in-store, large quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released into the air, where they accumulate and settle on surrounding surfaces. This creates several challenges.

First, the customer experience is far from optimal. The atmosphere quickly becomes saturated and loses its neutrality precisely when clients wish to discover new fragrances. When several scented blotters are presented in succession within a short period of time, olfactory receptors gradually lose sensitivity. Nuances become harder to distinguish, and the fragrance experience loses precision. Moreover, this method primarily highlights the top notes of a perfume, offering only a partial perception of the composition.

For perfumery staff, who are continuously exposed to repeated fragrance spraying within often poorly ventilated environments, the resulting concentration of VOCs, secondary particles and volatile solvents may represent an occupational risk that remains largely underestimated, yet very real.

Repeated spraying also requires the extraction and renewal of perfume-saturated air, contributing to growing urban VOC emissions. In addition, millions of paper blotters are discarded every day worldwide. This method represents a significant cost for brands due to the high volume of fragrance consumed.
